HAYWARD — Boxer Andre Ward, whose sharp jabs and crunching power punches made him an undefeated world champion, is returning to this town where he attended high school to inspire others who climb into the ring.

Ward will host “Generation NEXT Showdown,” his first amateur boxing competition, July 14 at the Hayward Adult School, 22100 Princeton St.

The event will benefit the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League, a nonprofit that includes boxing classes for kids among its programs.

“Amateur boxing is where I got my start, and it’s extremely important to me to stay connected with the young boxers currently competing in the sport and to provide any knowledge and inspiration I can give them,” Ward said in a release.
