Dan Simons of Farmers Restaurant Group is working to build a coalition of D.C.-area restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels to eliminate plastic straws from the premises.
This is following other similar moves nationally to help reduce the considerable amount of pollution caused by these straws.
Simons acknowledges biodegradable straws are more expensive, but he has negotiated a discount from manufacturer Aardvark Straws for coalition members.
Americans use 500 million plastic straws a day.
